Nothing to do with alveolar stops. It was the intervolic R between breaks as in 'law and order'. Probably because of the South African teacher I had last year. Your accents are quite similar. But not identical. (The vowels all sound a bit different and there's the linking R thing. In fact, my teacher often would skip word final /@/, saying, for example, 'th'Apartheid regime' for 'the Apartheid regime'. And her schwas were lower, I think. Closer to my /6/ (or /a/ or /V/ if you prefer) or pre-pause /@/). Tristan.
