I may have mentioned that this doesn't seem to work in my quirky version of Word 2000; however, when the "insert spec.char." font-box comes up and you select a char., you can then assign a CTRL+ or ALT+ keystroke, which works nicely. Re Open Office-- you can sorta do the same, but have to go thru the "create macro" process, which takes many steps :-((, I found the instructions in their online help forum IIRC. It saves many a trip to the "insert" thingy. Most of you probably know how to do this anyway, but if not, I have the instructions written down....for anyone who might need them.
