Dan,

Some people lurk because they are new to this hobby.
They don't understand all the technical terms that you
are talking about or how exactly to construct a
language, so they learn by watching.  They begin to
explore different things once they hear/learn about
them through discussions here.  "Why not just ask
questions?" is a question you might ask in response to
that, and my answer to that is sometimes you don't
know what questions to ask, until you see it in front
of you.  Hope this helps you understand some lurkers.
