But I seem to remember someone (Wasn't it Jacques Guy?) a few years back
with a conlang of just three consonants and three vowels; indeed, if my
memory serves me right, there were only three possible syllables: ka, zi,
mu. So I'm sure how one classifies the phonemic inventory; as the vowels
depend on the initial consonant and all syllables are open, I'd say that
was only three phonemes.

fairly understandable to me: one tunu alphabet writes "a" like "k", "i" like "s" and "u" like "m". further, "e" is like "c" [tS] and "o" like "l" and still it's by far the easiest script i came up with. however, the hilarious Shadoks--the best french ornythopumping fiction to date--have four words only, namely the frenchly famous "ga", "bu", "zo" and "meu" (to be pronounced as in french please) --but then they're the most stupid creatures in the universe too. and btw welcome delurking too, Ray.
