French *is* baby talk. =)))) No, seriously: I think the fact that French is spoken so far to the front of the mouth, with lots of pouty rounded vowels (even the schwa is rounded!) and palatised* consonants, makes Francophones (esp. women (esp. Laetitia Casta <G>)) sound cute. I guess that's why the language is synonymous with romance in the US. ;-) *) Palatisation: I don't know how true that is, but I find myself to sound much more authentic when pronouncing most consonants with a touch of palatisation. My "gare" sounds more like [g_ja:R] than just [ga:R]. This might be a regionalism.
