This happened in Latin too. Initial /w/ in words borrowed from Germanic languages became /gw/, spelt <gu->. This process then continued into the early Romance phase. Hence "William" (< Will-ialm) = "Guillaume" (< Guill-ialm). "Guard", borrowed from French (now "garde", "garder") is cognate with "ward(en/er)".
