Actually, according to the "Dune Encyclopedia", the Bene Gesserit is a perfect continuation of a coalition of Roman matrons founded under Augustus. This is why they call themselves by a Latin name. Many of the Semitic words in Dune appear to have similar corresponding terms in some schools of Hermetic mysticism/occultism. Herbert really did his homework.
