I actually live in the town of Marina which is by the more recognizeable town of Monterey. I go to California State University at Monterey Bay (they decided on that long name since they didnt want to snub the other towns i guess :) ). We are on the bay on the most southern side of it. The Los Padres National Forest stretches from the northern fringes of L.A. County all the way north to Monterey county (miles and miles of wild land). We also have redwood habitat not too far to the south of here. A twenty minute drive south along the coast leads you right into the redwood areas of Big Sur. The chaparal tends to become Pine forest habitat when it reaches the coastal mountains, and then mixed coniferous / deciduous forest the further south you go.
